Montgomery College issued a code red and closed all of its campuses Friday afternoon following emailed threats received from a former student, according to a statement from the college. All remote instruction and operations also were suspended.

At 1:30 p.m. the code red went into effect, according to a social media post from the college.

The college’s statement did not specify the nature of the threats the school received or when it will reopen the campuses.

“At this time, any information regarding an active threat on school property has not been deemed credible. The Office of Public Safety, Health and Emergency Management is working ongoing with local law enforcement,” the college’s public safety webpage says.

Local law enforcement is actively investigating the situation, Montgomery College spokesperson Marcus Rosano said in the statement.

Montgomery County Police did not respond to MoCo360’s questions about the closure and directed inquiries to the college.

Rosano said college officials contacted law enforcement after receiving the threats and decided to close all of the community college’s locations and suspend services during the investigation.

“We recognize that this situation may cause concern, and we want to assure the public that every precaution is being taken to maintain the safety of our learning environment,” Rosano said.
