With a 16% staffing shortage and callers using 911 rather than more appropriate non-emergency numbers, the wait time for a human to answer at Montgomery’s County Emergency Communications Center has increased. Solutions include a public information campaign about non-emergency numbers, a higher fee on phone bills and encouraging callers not to hang up while on hold. [WTOP]

DNA helped lead to a conviction Friday of a North Carolina man who raped two women in Silver Spring in 1981. Marion Pearson, 67, pleaded guilty to second-degree rape and second-degree sex assault. [WUSA9]

Two men held without bond in shooting death of Silver Spring man

Prince George’s County police have arrested and charged two men with the fatal Sept. 14 shooting of a Silver Spring man near the border of Montgomery County. The men are being held without bond. [ABC 7]
