Montgomery County police identified Dominique Mwepu, 53, as the victim of a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred Monday evening in Gaithersburg, according to a statement from police officials on Wednesday.
Officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded around 7:55 p.m. to the intersection of Frederick Road and High Point Drive for reports of a collision involving a blue Honda Prelude and a pedestrian, according to a Wednesday news release from Montgomery County police.
Mwepu sustained life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead on the scene, according to the release. The driver of the Prelude stayed at the scene and has cooperated with the investigation, which is ongoing.
According to a GoFundMe campaign claiming to be raising funds for Mwepu’s wife, Mireille, and a son, Joshua, he had just moved his family into their new home and was returning a U-Haul truck when he was struck and killed.
As of Thursday afternoon, the GoFundMe had raised more than $5,600.
Detectives are asking any witnesses to call 240-773-6620 with information.
