Man faces murder charge in death of 18-year-old Montgomery Village girlfriend

Gerber Luis Sanchez Centeno, 22, arrested Friday

A 22-year-old man was charged with murder Friday in the death of an 18-year-old woman in Montgomery Village, according to Montgomery County police.

Detectives arrested Gerber Luis Sanchez Centeno and charged him with first-degree murder in the Wednesday death of his girlfriend, Dania Cruz-Mejia of Montgomery Village, police said Friday in a statement. He is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit in Rockville. His place of residence was not stated.

Information for Sanchez Centeno’s legal representation was not immediately available Friday afternoon.

On Wednesday, police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews were called to a residence in the 18600 block of Calypso Place around 4:30 p.m. for a report of “a deceased person,” according to officials. Cruz-Mejia’s family members had entered her residence and found her unconscious, according to the statement. First responders attempted life-saving measures before pronouncing Cruz-Mejia dead at the scene.

Detectives began investigating Cruz-Mejia’s death as a homicide and identified Sanchez Centeno as a suspect. They obtained an arrest warrant and located him in Prince George’s County. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder on Friday, according to the news release.

Cruz-Mejia’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore on Wednesday for an autopsy to determine how she died, the statement said.
