Tequila Modern Mexican, a restaurant serving traditional Mexican dishes with a modern twist and a variety of creative cocktails, has opened in downtown Rockville.
Owner and general manager Jose Reyes told MoCo360 on Monday the Sept. 9 opening was a long time coming and that he was thankful for the support from the community.
“We’re very excited,” Reyes said. “We hope that the community loves what we are bringing to them. None of this would be possible without the support of the community.”
Tequila Modern Mexican is at 11 N. Washington St., across from Courthouse Center and about a block away from Rockville Town Square. The MoCo Show first reported the opening.
In addition to a variety of Mexican dishes, Tequila Modern Mexican is known for offering 100 types of tequila, according to Reyes. Diners also can sip on specialty margaritas and cocktails such as the jalapeno-cucumber margarita and the coco azul margarita with coconut tequila and blue curacao.
The dinner menu lists platters and entrees ranging in price from $4 to $40 including 12 different types of burritos and a dish with grilled shrimp, steak and chicken served in a hollowed-out pineapple, according to the menu.
The new eatery will be the restaurant’s third location and first in Maryland. The restaurant also operates two locations in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and is slated to open others in North Carolina and Kansas, according to the restaurant’s website.
Reyes said the Rockville location was expected to open in February but was delayed due to navigating laws pertaining to restaurants in a new state and the timing of permit approvals.
The restaurant is in soft opening mode, Reyes said, with staff working through operational issues. A grand opening celebration is not planned, according to Reyes.
“It’s still a learning process,” he said. “We’re still working on these little hiccups that are coming up.”
The restaurant serves lunch daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with dishes ranging in price from $9 to $14, according to the menu. Lunch options include huevos rancheros, tacos de asada and a variety of burrito, taco, quesadilla, taquito and enchilada combinations with rice and bean sides.
For dessert, diners will find classic Mexican sweets including churros and sopapillas, a puffed fried pastry dusted in cinnamon sugar, as well as more unusual dishes such as Fruity Pebbles fried ice cream and cheesecake chimichangas.
Tequila Modern Mexican is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.
