A Washington, D.C., man is facing charges including attempted murder in connection with the Monday morning stabbing of a 66-year-old woman sitting on a bus stop bench in Chevy Chase, according to Montgomery County police.
Marcus Dwayne Jackson, 39, was arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., shortly after the stabbing at 2 Wisconsin Circle and taken to a detention center in the District, where he is awaiting extradition to Montgomery County, county police said in a statement Monday afternoon.
Jackson was charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, possession of a dangerous weapon with intent to injure, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, the statement said.
The woman, who was stabbed in the upper body, is in critical condition, police said. She was transported to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda after life-saving measures were administered at the scene, according to police and radio transmissions.
Police are crediting a witness who saw the stabbing with helping to catch the suspect by immediately calling 911 to report the crime and then following the suspect to the area of Connecticut and Western avenues where Metropolitan Police Department officers took him into custody, according to the statement.
County police, along with Metropolitan Police Department and Metro transit police officers, and the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched around 9:22 a.m. for reports of a stabbing in the area of 2 Wisconsin Circle, according to police. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service were also dispatched to the location, according to radio transmissions.
After the suspect allegedly stabbed the woman, he left the scene and headed toward the District, according to county police.
Metropolitan Police Department officers apprehended him within seven minutes, according to radio transmissions and county police. Police also located a large knife.
The address of the attack is near the Friendship Heights Metro station.
