Montgomery County police have identified a 20-year-old Gaithersburg woman as the driver who was killed when her car struck a tree Sunday night in Derwood, authorities said on Tuesday.

Saraha Aminata Tumoe was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, police said in a statement.

According to police, officers responded at about 9:53 p.m. to a report of a single-vehicle collision on Shady Grove Road, north of the intersection with Briardale Road.

Detectives have determined that Tumoe was driving a gray 1999 Acura TL northbound on Shady Grove Road when, for reasons still under investigation, she lost control of the car. The car then left the roadway, hit a curb, rolled over on its side and hit a tree in the center median.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Pete Piringer told MoCo360 Monday morning that crews responded to the scene and found an entrapment situation.

On social media on Sunday, Piringer wrote the collision resulted in a prolonged extrication process and some lanes on the road were blocked.

Detectives continue to investigate and ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call 240-773-6620.
