A woman was killed when the vehicle she was driving struck a tree Sunday night in Derwood, authorities said Monday.

Officers responded at about 9:53 p.m. to a report of a single-vehicle collision on Shady Grove Road, north of the intersection with Briardale Road, police said in a statement.

“For reasons still under the investigation, the driver of a gray 1999 Acura TL lost control and hit a tree,” the statement said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. No identity was provided.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Pete Piringer told MoCo360 Monday morning that crews responded to the scene and found an entrapment situation.

On social media, Piringer wrote the collision resulted in a prolonged extrication process and some lanes on the road were blocked.

Police are investigating the collision and said the occupant’s identity will be released after proper notification of next of kin.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
