A severe thunderstorm Wednesday evening toppled trees and knocked down power lines in Chevy Chase, leading to the temporary closure of a section of Connecticut Avenue, according to authorities.
More scattered storms are expected Thursday afternoon as high heat returns. With temperatures expected in the upper 90s, Montgomery County has declared a hyperthermia alert from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
On Wednesday, the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security announced at about 5 p.m. that a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for southeastern Montgomery County until 5:45 p.m.
At about 6:15 p.m., the office announced that Connecticut Avenue was closed in both directions at Underwood Street for an extended period after a falling tree took down power lines. The lanes reopened around 9:30 p.m., the office announced.
During the storm, a house in the 2600 block of Blaine Drive in Chevy Chase was damaged after a tree fell through the roof, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) spokesperson Pete Piringer.
MCFRS crews responded around 7 p.m. to the brick split-level home, Piringer wrote on social media. No injuries were reported.
