A tractor-trailer crashed and overturned early Wednesday on northbound I-270 in Bethesda, leaving one person injured and causing traffic backups during the morning rush hour, according to authorities.

By 8 a.m., one right travel lane remained blocked while two left lanes were open, according to the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination (MATOC) program. The closure is expected to be extended. Traffic delays in the northbound lanes were building before River Road on the Beltway.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded at about 2 a.m. to a report of a crash on the 1-270 spur near Democracy Boulevard, spokesperson Pete Piringer wrote on social media.

One adult was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

The fire department’s hazardous material crews assisted with a fuel leak from the damaged tanks of the truck, which had landed on its side in the woods along the roadway, according to Piringer.

The two right travel lanes of the highway initially were closed after the crash, with one left lane and left shoulder open, according to MATOC.
