Aerial fireworks that ignited a carport roof are the suspected cause of an Aspen Hill house fire that left one person displaced late on the night of July 4th, according to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS).
About 65 firefighters responded to a report at about 11:30 p.m. of a fire at a split-level, single-family home in the 14400 block of Brad Drive, spokesperson Pete Piringer wrote on social media.
Piringer said the blaze was caused by aerial fireworks that struck the carport roof, igniting flames that then spread to the attic. No injuries were reported, but one person was displaced.
The property sustained damages estimated in value at about $500,000, including about $400,000 to the house and about $100,000 to its contents, a car and a neighbor’s shed.
Piringer did not say who had set off the fireworks.
Before the holiday and during the holiday, MCFRS and county emergency management officials had posted messages on social media warning residents of the dangers of fireworks and that they were illegal in the county.
