Two people died and another two were injured when three vehicles collided Friday morning in the northbound lanes of I-270 between Falls Road and Route 28, according to authorities.
One of the vehicles caught on fire and one occupant was able to escape while two were trapped and did not escape, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Pete Piringer wrote on social media.
The person who escaped was transported with non-life-threatening injuries to an area hospital, he said. An occupant of another vehicle was also evaluated for non-life-threating injuries.
One vehicle “appeared to be abandoned,” Piringer said.
Those who died and were injured were not identified.
The main northbound lanes of the highway remained closed as of 8 a.m. as authorities investigated the collision. The local lanes between Montrose Road and Route 28 are open, according to Piringer.
All northbound lanes had reopened as of about 11:20 a.m., according to county officials.
