Second graduate of Bethesda’s Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart qualifies to swim for U.S. Olympic team

Erin Gemmell, a rising sophomore at the University of Texas and an alum of Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, will join fellow Stone Ridge graduate and star swimmer Katie Ledecky on the U.S. Olympic team after finishing in fourth place in the 200-meter freestyle final Monday at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Gemmell will compete for the U.S. in the Paris Olympics this summer in the 4×200 freestyle relay swimming competition. [The University of Texas at Austin Athletics]

Montgomery County residents celebrate Juneteenth in Scotland

The historically Black Scotland AME Zion Church in Potomac put on a festival, fun run and performances in the Scotland community to commemorate the Juneteenth holiday Wednesday. At Cabin John Park there was a kids-centered festival with rides and food trucks. To end the celebrations, the county blasted off fireworks at Shirley Povich Field in Rockville at night. [NBC 4]

County giving out free fans during heat wave

Montgomery County’s Department of Health and Human Services is offering residents free fans throughout this week and next week as temperatures soar into the 90s. Those suffering from the heat can call DHHS at 240-777-3000 to request a fan. [Montgomery Community Media]
