Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded to reports of a gas leak around 10:45 a.m. Thursday in the 5600 block of Spruce Tree Avenue in Bethesda, according to MCFRS spokesperson David Pazos.
Hazmat units were also on hand after a 2-inch gas line was struck in front of a home, Pazos said. Fire and rescue crews began to evacuate the area and meter air conditions as they waited for Washington Gas to arrive.
In an update at 11:07 a.m, Pazos added that MCFRS crews were “unable to control gas in [the] street.”
Pazos told MoCo360 that Washington Gas arrived at 11:13 a.m.
The surrounding area was subsequently metered and roads in the area were closed. The YMCA at 9401 Old Georgetown Road was also evacuated.
No injuries were reported at the scene, according to Pazos, who said he did not know at what exact time residents were allowed to return to their homes.
According to Pazos, there “weren’t too many” residents evacuated from single-family homes.
At about 2:55 p.m. Thursday, an employee of the Bethesda YMCA told MoCo360 the building had reopened about an hour ago.
Pazos said the YMCA was reopened “probably around 1:30” as a crew from the fire station at the intersection of Cedar Lane and Old Georgetown Road returned from duty at 2:15 p.m.
