One person died and five others were injured after a three-vehicle collision early Wednesday on I-495 in Silver Spring, according to Maryland State Police.
State troopers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded to a report of a crash at about 3 a.m. on the Inner Loop of I-495 at Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, state police said in a release Wednesday morning.
According to police, a 2005 Honda Accord struck a 2020 Jeep Wrangler and a 2007 Honda Civic while entering I-495 off a ramp from southbound Georgia Avenue.
MCFRS crews who responded to the scene evaluated several patients, with one person “ejected, one person trapped/extricated.” All were trauma patients and one “did not survive,” spokesperson Pete Piringer wrote on social media.
The person who died has not yet been identified, police said.
The drivers of all three vehicles and two passengers in the Civic were transported to the hospital for injuries, police said. The deceased was a passenger in the Accord.
The Inner Loop was closed at exit 31 after the collision, according to state highway officials.
The continuing lane closures resulted in traffic backups Wednesday morning on both sides of the highway, according to local officials.
All lanes had reopened shortly before 8 a.m., according to the state highway administration.
