Montgomery County police are investigating a shooting Tuesday in a Montgomery Village apartment that left a 3-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound.
Investigators are trying to determine how the child, who is recovering from surgery in an area hospital, sustained her injuries, police said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.
According to police, officers responded shortly after noon Tuesday to a report of an injured child at a residence in the 18700 block of Walkers Choice Road.
“We found a child who was injured to the hand and leg, undetermined means,” said police Commander Eric Stancliff, who was at the scene.
The child was transported by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service to an area hospital where she underwent surgery, the statement said. According to police radio transmissions on Tuesday, the child was transported to Children’s National Hospital before 12:30 p.m.
Investigators later found a .40 caliber privately manufactured firearm while searching the apartment, the release said. Such firearms are commonly referred to as ghost guns because they are harder for law enforcement to trace.
Police have charged a 15-year-old who does not live at the location with possessing ammunition by a prohibited person, which is a misdemeanor, the statement said.
During the incident, a 1-year-old child and two teens were also in the home, but did not appear to be injured, according to the transmissions.
Police spokesperson Shiera Goff later said Tuesday in an email that “three adults in the home” had been detained.
The investigation of the incident is ongoing, police said.
