As the 80th anniversary of D-Day approaches, World War II veteran Waverly B. Woodson Jr. of Clarksburg is being posthumously recognized for his service as a 21-year-old medic who saved an estimated 200 lives that day. Despite being recommended for a Medals of Honor at the time, Woodson was part of an all-Black unit and “not one Black soldier who deserved the highest U.S. military recognition was awarded it–revealing a clear pattern of racism in the decision-making process at that time,” according to a press release from U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.). Woodson’s 95-year-old widow lives in Clarksburg, where they settled after the war. [Politico]
