A “major” gas leak forced the evacuation Friday night of about 300 people and several restaurants and stores along Norfolk Avenue in downtown Bethesda, according to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS).

Norfolk Avenue between Delray and St. Elmo avenues was closed around 7:30 p.m. and restaurants and outdoor seating areas had been evacuated as a precaution, MCFRS spokesman Pete Piringer posted on social media.

Gas company crews were on the scene evaluating the situation, which produced “high meter readings,” and looking for the source of the leak, Piringer said. No fire was reported.
