The Underground Pizza Co. will close its downtown Silver Spring location on Monday, according to an announcement sent by email and posted on social media.

The company–which also has locations in Baltimore, Towson, and Washington, D.C.—opened in early 2022 at 8235 Georgia Ave., taking over the space formerly occupied by the Italian restaurant Olazzo, which closed in 2021.

According to the announcement, the Silver Spring location did not perform as well as the company had anticipated.

“When we first took over the lease from Olazzo we had high hopes for the space … but we realized the ceiling was a lot lower than we had anticipated,” the announcement said.

Underground Pizza co-founder Evan Weinstein established the company after baking pizzas while in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic and later expanding the business. The first Underground Pizza location opened in Baltimore in 2020.

A MoCo360 request for comment sent to the text-only phone number for Underground’s Silver Spring location went unanswered Friday afternoon.

The post said that all other Underground Pizza locations will continue to operate under normal business hours, and all gift cards and loyalty points will still be redeemable across all locations.
