Montgomery County police have released the identity of a man who died nine days after he was injured May 19 in a two-car collision in Silver Spring.

Adolfo Cabrera, 79, of Silver Spring died Tuesday of injuries sustained in a collision that occurred around 8 p.m. May 19 at the intersection of University Boulevard East and Buckingham Drive, police said Thursday in a statement.

According to police, the driver of a 2018 Audi Q5 was traveling eastbound on University Boulevard East when the car struck a 2013 Honda CR-V driven by Cabrera as he attempted to turn left from Buckingham Drive onto University Boulevard East. After the collision, the Honda hit a tree.

Cabrera was transported to an area hospital “with injuries that were initially thought to be non-life threatening,” the statement said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital on Tuesday.

The driver of the Audi and three passengers were uninjured, police said.

Police are continuing to investigate the collision and ask anyone with information to contact detectives at 240-773-6620.

Once the investigation is complete, the department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit will “consult with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding the appropriateness of charges related to the collision,” police spokesman Casandra Tressler said Thursday in an email.
