Montgomery County residents were still dealing Tuesday with the ramifications of the Memorial Day storm that knocked down power lines, transformers, and trees across the area.
Overnight road closures, primarily caused by downed trees and power lines, spanned various parts of the county–including the 9700 block of Connecticut Avenue in Kensington, the intersection of Connecticut and Newlands avenues in Chevy Chase, and parts of the Woodmoor neighborhood in Silver Spring. There were also reports of high water on the Capital Beltway near Colesville Road.
At the height of the storm, approximately 3,000 people had lost power, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Pete Piringer. The highest concentration of outages was in Potomac, Kensington and Chevy Chase.
By 9:48 p.m. Monday night, that number had dwindled to more than 2,000 outages.
As of 10:52 a.m. Tuesday morning, Pepco was reporting 16 active outages with 28 customers affected in Montgomery County
The most significant damage was at the intersection of Lloyd and Glen Mill roads, where downed trees caused outages and closures, according to Piringer.
MCFRS crews responded to several reports of vehicle collisions, but Piringer said there were no major disruptions.
“We had a few wrecks, nothing too extraordinary,” he said, citing a few crashes on I-270 specifically.
One of those incidents involved a state trooper’s cruiser and occurred Monday night in a downpour “during rush hour” on I-270 north of Watkins Mill Road, according to Piringer.
