A local kayaker heading to the Paris Olympics, a Kensington costume shop damaged by fire, a local puppeteer undergoing cancer treatment and an Afghan family facing homelessness–these are some of the GoFundMe campaigns that helped Silver Spring place third on the crowdfunding platform’s list of the nation’s most-generous cities.
GoFundMe announced Tuesday it is honoring Silver Spring as the third most-generous city nationwide in 2023 with a June 8 celebration to be held downtown at the FRESHFARM farmers market in Veterans Plaza, according to an email announcement.
The June 8 event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with local and state leadership slated to attend, the release said. The event is set to include a photo booth, food from local businesses and free merchandise.
According to the company, Silver Spring is listed behind Spring, Texas, and Marietta, Georgia, in terms of donations per capita among cities with populations over 50,000. In Maryland, contributors donated a total of $47 million to more than 100,000 fundraisers in 2023.
