Shooting reported at Lake Whetstone in Montgomery Village

Tuesday afternoon incident was apparent suicide, police radio transmissions say

Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon at Lake Whetstone in Montgomery Village, according to radio transmissions.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., police responded to the park at 18701 Montgomery Village Ave. for a report of an apparent suicide, the transmissions said.

Officers found a person with a “gunshot wound to the head” who was “clearly deceased at this point,” according to radio transmissions. Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service personnel also were initially dispatched for a shooting.

The Montgomery County Village Foundation posted on Facebook shortly before 4:30 p.m. that the park was closed “due to an active police investigation.”

“There is no threat to the community,” the foundation said, adding it would “update via social media when the park reopens.”
