Metro fares for bus and rail will increase July 1

Beginning in July, Metro bus and rail fares will increase in the region as a means to continue funding and operating the transportation system, which was facing significant budget cuts. On July 1, bus fares and base rail fares will increase from $2 to $2.25; the maximum rail fare will increase from $6 to $6.75; and late-night and weekend fares will increase from a flat rate of $2 to $2.25 or $2.50 depending on distance traveled.

In addition, MetroAccess fares will rise from $4 to $4.50 and bike lockers will cost five cents an hour, but parking fees will not change. [Montgomery Community Media]

Potomac teen gets new backyard court from Make-A-Wish

A Potomac 13-year-old can now enjoy and easily navigate her new backyard play area and court thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the Atlantic region. The girl has a nervous system disorder and uses a wheelchair, which made it difficult to play in her backyard before her wish was granted. [WJLA 7 News]

How Rockville became a hub for MoCo’s Asian American community

Over the past four decades, the City of Rockville has become a hub for the county’s Asian American community, which is the city’s largest racial minority group. John Lin, president of CapStar Commercial Realty and a member of the city’s Asian Pacific American Task Force, said that Rockville gained popularity with the community with the opening of Meixin Supermarket in the 1980s.
