State law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision on Rockville Pike that occurred after an attempted traffic stop early Saturday, according to a statement from Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown.

According to the attorney general’s Saturday statement, two on-duty Montgomery County sheriff deputies, riding together in a marked police cruiser, were “in the area of Rockville Pike near Flanders Avenue, when they observed a Dodge sedan traveling north on Rockville Pike at a high rate of speed” at about 2:25 a.m. The deputies activated their emergency equipment about 35 seconds later.

The statement said the deputies, attempting to locate the Dodge sedan, then “came upon a two-car collision involving the Dodge” near the intersection of Rockville Pike and Twinbrook Parkway.

According to a preliminary investigation, the Dodge sedan collided with a Honda sedan turning south onto Rockville Pike.

Montgomery Fire and Rescue Service crews responding to the collision found two occupied vehicles, with one having rolled over, MCFRS Assistant Chief David Pazos wrote on social media.

The emergency responders extricated the occupants of the vehicles. The female driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman who was a passenger in the Dodge sedan, which had rolled over, was transported in critical condition to a trauma hospital, according to authorities.

The man who was driving the Dodge fled the collision on foot and was caught by police a short time later, the statement said.

No information about the identities of the women was provided. The Independent Investigations Division will “generally release the name of the decedent and involved deputies within two business days of the incident, although that period may be extended if there is a specific reason to believe that an officer’s safety is at risk,” the statement said.

The investigations division, along with Maryland state police, is investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision, the statement said. It is expected to release footage from the deputies’ body cameras within 20 business days of the incident.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of Rockville Pike were closed from Bou Avenue to Twinbrook Parkway and Rollins Avenue after the collision. The lanes remained closed until about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, according to authorities.

The investigations division asks anyone with information about the collision to call 410-576-7070 or email IID@oag.state.md.us.
