The Foxtrot café and market in Bethesda Row is closing its doors as the company is shutting down all its locations.

A sign posted to the door reads “As of today, we are closed for the final time. Thank you for the time we had together.”

Passersby on Tuesday afternoon stopped to try the door handle, take a photo of the sign or exclaim “that sucks!”

Elizabeth Carroll, 23, was one of them. “I got a text blast from friends and my boyfriend saying ‘Oh my god, Foxtrot is closing’ and I started to freak out because it was all of the locations.”

Carroll, who lives nearby in Bethesda, said that she visited Foxtrot “many times.” Though it was expensive compared to other local spots, the Vigilante Coffee it offered reminded her fondly of her college days at the University of Maryland, and the late opening hours were convenient “when I need an emergency wine run.”

A statement posted to Foxtrot’s social media explained that “we explored many avenues to continue the business but found no viable option despite good faith and exhaustive efforts.”

The chain ran 33 locations in the D.C., Chicago, Austin and Dallas areas, with popular stores in Georgetown and Dupont Circle.

According to PopVille, employees and customers who visited D.C. stores today were surprised to find doors locked and lights off.
