A man was struck and killed by a train at the North Bethesda Metro station on Sunday evening, according to Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) spokesperson Sherri Ly.
Around 8 p.m., WMATA received a report that a person was struck by a train, Ly said Monday morning. Emergency personnel responded, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) spokesperson Pete Piringer said on X that MCFRS personnel responded to assist WMATA police in the emergency response and with helping passengers exit the train.
Ly said a preliminary investigation found the man trespassed at the Metro station at 5500 Marinelli Road. He walked beyond the gate at the end of the platform and onto the tracks, Ly said.
“He intentionally placed himself in the path of the train,” she said.
No information was available Monday morning about the man’s identity, Ly said.
Ly said there were temporary delays on the Red Line after the incident, but trains were running on time Monday morning.
