Authorities are advising drivers to seek alternate routes Tuesday morning after an overturned tractor trailer crash blocked two lanes of the Inner Loop of the Beltway just before the River Road exit.

As of 8:30 a.m., all lanes had reopened, but traffic delays persisted in the northbound lanes beginning before I-66 in Virginia, according to a social media post from the Metropolitan Area Transporation Operations Coordination. In the Outer Loop lanes, rubbernecking delays began before the I-270 interchange.

At about 6:45 a.m., the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management & Homeland Security posted on social media that the incident, which occurred earlier Tuesday morning, is expected to cause “significant delays” and may persist through the morning commute.

The crash involved several vehicles and several people were evaluated for injuries, according to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services spokesman Pete Piringer. The truck driver was transported to a local hospital.
