Boyds gymnast Kayla DiCello won USA Gymnastics’ Winter Cup on Saturday, beating out NCAA champions and other elite athletes.

The national elite gymnastics competition was held in Louisville, Kentucky. DiCello took home the gold with more than a two point margin over the athletes.

DiCello trains with Hill’s Gymnastics in Gaithersburg and is coached by Kelli Hill.

“I look at my scores to see where they’re at and stuff, but I’m not very big on looking at overall like everybody else,” DiCello said.

Metro to increase safety patrols on trains and buses

Metro plans to increase patrolling by Transit Police Officers on trains and buses and at stations.

Special police officers will patrol buses and train cars in real time to monitor activity, and Metro will employ over 30,000 cameras.

“As ridership increases, we want customers to see our officers and feel confident that we’re doing our part to keep them safe,” said Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Anzallo. “We hope customers will interact with the special police officers during their patrols and develop a rapport that promotes positive community connections.”

Rockville allergist excited about newly FDA-approved drug

The FDA has approved Xolair, an asthma drug, as a medication protecting people with severe food allergies.

“Essentially, we’re sort of repurposing the drug, the use of the drug, for prevention of food allergy reactions to a small amount of accidental exposure,” said Dr. Rachel Schreiber with Schreiber Allergy in Rockville.

While the drug doesn’t make people with food allergies immune to reactions, evidence suggests it can increase their tolerance.
