D.C.-area Chef José Andrés, a Bethesda resident, was nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

“Chef Andrés and his team are nothing short of heroes for humanity – not only conquering hunger but spreading hope,” Reps. Nancy Pelosi (D-California), Rose DeLauro (D-Connecticut), and Jim McGovern (D- Massachusetts) wrote in a letter to the Nobel Committee. “During many dark and difficult moments, the impact of Chef Andrés and World Central Kitchen has been extraordinary.”

Andrés’ World Food Kitchen, created in 2010 following the Haiti earthquake, has provided roughly 350 million meals around the globe to those impacted by COVID-19, the Ukraine war, the Israel-Hamas war and more, according to a statement. [WJLA]

Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center facing two year closure

The Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center will be closed starting June 28 for renovations the county expects to last at least two years.

The project is led by the Montgomery County Department of General Services, and the new aquatic center in Silver Spring is set to open prior to the Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center’s closure.

Annual passes will still be valid at all of the county’s aquatic facilities, including the indoor centers in Olney, Germantown and White Oak. Passholders can also apply for a pro-rated refund by emailing rec.financeoffice@montgomerycountymd.gov.
