Gov. Wes Moore (D) is endorsing Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks for the Maryland seat in the U.S. Senate, he first told The Washington Post in an interview Monday.

“When you look at what’s happening in the world broadly and the state directly, when you look at the fact that it’s never been more clear that American leadership is needed in the world and Maryland’s leadership is needed in this countryWe want to have the right kind of partner inside of Washington who’s going to deliver for people in our state,” Moore told the Post.

To political observers, the endorsement may not come as a surprise, given that Alsobrooks endorsed Moore in his race for the governor’s seat last year in March 2022.

At a campaign event in Baltimore on Monday, Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando (D-At-large) also endorsed Alsobrooks, Jawando’s campaign communications director told MoCo360.

“It’s time now for Democrats to coalesce for the strongest candidate, who I know will fight for residents with every bone in her body,” Jawando said.

Jawando dropped out of the Senate race Friday, stating that he “cannot remain in a race I do not believe I can win.”

Jawando was trailing Alsobrooks and U.S. Rep. David Trone (D-Dist. 6) in fundraising. Trone has raised $9,978,838 – much of which came from his personal funds – and Alsobrooks has raised $3,256,403 since the beginning of the campaign cycle. Jawando raised $751,524.

Alsobrooks announced her candidacy for U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin’s (D-Md.) seat in May after Cardin announced he would not run for reelection. The term ends at the end of 2024. Alsobrooks has received endorsements from U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) as well as several prominent Montgomery County-based legislators including Sen. Jeff Waldstreicher (D-Dist. 18), Sen. Ben Kramer of (D-Dist. 19), Del. Charlotte Crutchfield (D-Dist. 19), Sen. Will Smith (D-Dist. 20) and Del. Jheanelle Wilkins (D-Dist. 20.
