28-year-old man fatally stabbed after exiting Metrobus in Wheaton

A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect

A man was fatally stabbed Wednesday afternoon around University Boulevard West and Amherst Avenue in Wheaton, Montgomery County Police announced. On Friday, police revealed the victim to be 28-year-old Amontae Robert Cunningham of Rockville.

According to police, officers responded to reports of the stabbing around 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, in front of Montgomery County Public Parking Garage #45, in the 11300 block of Amherst Avenue.

Police stated a verbal dispute took place between Cunningham and an unknown male suspect in a Metrobus. The suspect followed Cunningham off the bus, and reportedly ran away after stabbing the victim.

Cunningham sustained critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, according to police officials. He died due to his injuries, police said.

Police asked any passengers on the WMATA bus before the stabbing occurred to contact the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.

Officials asked anyone with information on the suspect and the incident to call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).

Police stated a reward of up to $10,000 would be offered for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect. Callers may choose to remain anonymous, police said.
