A bicyclist has died after colliding with a vehicle in Bethesda, according to Montgomery County police.
Police got a call for a collision involving a bicyclist and a vehicle around 4:09 p.m. Wednesday, police said in a press release.
Detectives determined during the investigation that a person was riding a Trek bicycle south on the northbound sidewalk on Old Georgetown Road while another person driving a white 2012 Ford F-250 cargo van was traveling north on Old Georgetown Road near Cheshire Drive, police said.
Police said the bicycle then went off the sidewalk “for reasons still under investigation” and collided with the van. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the driver of the Ford stayed at the scene.
Police had not identified the bicyclist as of Thursday morning, but said they would do so once the victim’s family had been notified.
The area of Old Georgetown Road where the crash happened is just north of where 17-year-old bicyclist Jake Cassell was struck and killed in July 2019. Cassell’s death led to the implementation of bike lanes on part of the road.
On Wednesday, state Del. Marc Korman (D-District 16), who represents Bethesda, posted on Facebook that the bike lanes do not extend north past Ryland Drive. State legislators from District 16 and County Council Member Andrew Friedson, who represents the area, will meet with the State Highway Administration next week to discuss the issue, he posted.
