Why are you running for this office?
I am running to bring progressive values and a record of successful service to Congress. I want to assure that people are heard, and constituent requests are answered quickly and with respect. I will work for a more just, equitable, and prosperous society for all our residents where we have strong schools, secure retirements, safe communities with economic and environmental justice, strong unions, and public officials who protect working people and their families.
What is the most important issue in this race and what specific plans do you have to address it?
Economic issues. They need to be addressed in fair and just ways. We need rewarding and good-paying jobs, and those jobs need to be available to everyone fairly. Economic growth is vital, and it is important that small and minority businesses have a fair and equal opportunity to win government contracts and business. We need to bring inflation down, which hits working people hardest. Taxes need to be reformed and perceived as fair (currently they are not). Too often in minority communities economic growth comes with environmental degradation; economic growth must be linked to our demand for environmental justice.
What is one major issue that has been handled poorly and what would you have done differently?
Addressing climate change has lacked urgency. It is real, and fundamental changes are needed. Greenhouse gases must be cut faster to avoid the worst consequences, and we also need to prepare for the changes that are coming (and are already underway). We need to generate virtually all our nation’s electricity from renewable and zero-emission power sources. The power grid needs to be updated and hardened; buildings need to be retrofitted for energy efficiency, and new construction should be mandated to meet high efficiency standards. We need to move to all-electric vehicles. The crisis is real; we need to act now.
What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office?
I served as Prince George’s State’s Attorney where I worked in the community innovatively and successfully, and prior to that as a senior aide to U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. Earlier I worked for Rep. John Conyers as a senior legislative assistant. As a senior aide in Congress, I succeeded in hard-won fights against extremist Republicans. I know the process, and today our very democracy is threatened. As both an attorney and as a public servant, I’ve stood up for people who’ve needed a champion, and because of my wide-ranging experiences I’ve delivered.
