Why are you running for this office?
I am running for reelection to continue representing the people and values of District 16. It has been an honor to serve for the last four years and I look forward to continuing to fight for the things we believe in, including a clean environment, the right to choose, good public schools, equity, and privacy rights.
What is the most important issue in this race and what specific plans do you have to address it?
There are many issues that are important to District 16 and to Marylanders, including those I mentioned above, plus good jobs, good public transportation, a fair criminal legal system, voting rights, affordable housing, and a government that works for the people. My colleagues and I have passed legislation on many of them, and continue to work on bills to address these issues.
What is one criticism you have received while in office and what is your response?
One criticism I have heard is from a few constituents that they do not like my position on the right to choose. My response is that on this, we will have to agree to disagree, but I hope we can work together on other issues. I have always been a strong advocate of reproductive liberty, and the majority of my constituents support it.
What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office?
I have served in this office for the last four years. Prior to that, I was the policy director for the ACLU of Maryland, working with coalition groups and legislators to advance civil liberties. In addition, I was the general counsel of NARAL Pro-Choice America, working at a national level and supporting our state affiliates to protect reproductive liberty.

Why are you running for this office?
For the past eight years I have worked on the issues I said I would: increasing the state’s allocation to Montgomery County for school construction; advancing multi-modal transportation options; and promoting sustainable economic growth and prosperity, with an emphasis on the environmental sustainability piece. Now as we come out of COVID, we must work on each of these issues and ensure we are prioritizing policies that support our communities, keep our economy growing, make-up for learning loss and continue to advance public education, and continue to meet and exceed our ambitious environmental goals.
What is the most important issue in this race and what specific plans do you have to address it?
How we come of out of COVID across a full range of areas is crucial right now. We must learn from our successes and failures as we battle back from learning loss in our public schools, rebuild public transit ridership, ensure economic opportunity for all, continue to prioritize healthcare for all, and do what we can to mitigate against future public health threats and challenges, many of which may be caused by climate change.
What is one criticism you have received while in office and what is your response?
In the summer of 2021, Gov. Hogan’s PAC ran attack ads against me claiming I was “against traffic solutions” and that a vote at a planning body would kill various transportation projects the governor had already declined to fund. You can see the ads here: https://tinyurl.com/2p8wtcmm
My response was threefold:
1. Everywhere possible, including social media I explained what my disagreement with the governor was and why I thought his claims were misleading.
2. I maintained my position against the governor’s ill-conceived project, one he has already had to improve because of concerns like those I raised, despite the pressure he tried to place on me to flip flop.
3. I continued to work with the Hogan administration in all other areas possible despite the absurd partisan attacks.
I believe that is what the voters get from me. Someone who has substance behind their positions–even if others don’t fully agree–who will not fold when it gets hard but will find common ground where possible.
What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office?
Before my first campaign, I had been involved both civically (through the Bethesda Urban Partnership, Western Montgomery County Citizens Advisory Board, and Action Committee for Transit) and politically (as an elected member of the local Democratic Party and former Young Democrats president) in my community. Now I have two terms of experience as a delegate, subcommittee chair, and delegation chair to draw on.

Why are you running for this office?
I want to continue my work in the Senate to enhance the lives of all Marylanders. As a senator and majority whip, I have helped passed important laws to advance education, gun safety, clean environment, women’s reproductive rights, affordable health care, cybersecurity, bioscience, police reform; sound transportation solutions and mass transit; fight domestic violence, human and labor trafficking, identity theft; and cyberattacks. Building on my record, I want to continue to work to uplift all Marylanders.
What is the most important issue in this race and what specific plans do you have to address it?
Some of the most pressing are education – to provide funding and support to implement the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future to ensure every student has the opportunity to receive the best education and succeed, and that educators and staff are provided with the support and resources they need to educate our students in a nurturing and safe environment; protecting women’s reproductive rights; clean environment and addressing climate change; economic security and affordable and quality health care; promoting sound transportation solutions and mass transit; public safety and creating a more equitable criminal justice system; and relief measures to help Marylanders recover from this pandemic.
What is one criticism you have received while in office and what is your response?
Because of the enormous challenges created by Covid, the Senate had to hit the ground running and work hard in a new normal, including having online hearings and strict safety protocols for conducting in person voting, to pass numerous relief and recovery measures to help Marylanders get back on their feet and to ensure no one fell through the cracks. As result, we learned from this experience and passed important legislation to ensure Maryland is proactive and better prepared to address any future challenges.
What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office?
As a senator and majority whip, I have helped passed major laws to advance education, gun safety, clean environment and energy, pay equity (Maryland Equal Pay for Equal Work Act), civil rights, women’s reproductive rights, affordable health care, bioscience, cybersecurity, telehealth, and mass transit; fight domestic violence, human and labor trafficking (True Freedom Act and Anti-Exploitation Act), hate crimes, child and senior abuse, and identity theft, including help leading efforts to pass a ban on ghost guns to keep families and communities safe. Building on my track record of leadership, experience, and hard work, I can continue to work to uplift the lives of all Marylanders.
