A man died after being injured in a house fire Monday night in the Carderock area of Montgomery County, west of Cabin John, according to a Montgomery County Fire & Rescue official.

Alfredo E. Peak, 87, died of smoke inhalation and respiratory burns, Fire & Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer posted on Twitter.

Firefighters were called to a house fire on Anchorage Drive around 7:30 p.m., Piringer said in a video posted to Twitter.

They rescued two people from the home, including Peak who was unconscious.

Peak was taken to a hospital with injuries considered life-threatening, and later died, Piringer said.

The other person in the house was not injured, Piringer said.

Piringer said crews were evaluating the cause of the fire, and think it might have started in a living room. Strong winds in the area Monday night might have been a factor, he said.

The fire happened in an area of Montgomery County close to the Potomac River and the Naval Surface Warfare Center. The fire briefly closed MacArthur Boulevard, then it reopened.
