Berries & Bowls opens in downtown Bethesda

Berries & Bowls, an eatery that serves fruit bowls, smoothies and juices, opened at 4961 Elm St. in downtown Bethesda last week.

Berries & Bowls serves a variety of bowls that consist of a fruit base such as acai, pitaya, coconut, kale, spirulina and jackfruit. Its website lists 13 bowl combinations of a base and ingredients such as granola, honey, Nutella, nuts and various fruits.

The eatery also lists seven types of smoothies and seven types of fruit juices on its menu.

Berries & Bowls posted on its Facebook page on Aug. 14 that it had opened. The Bethesda location is the second in Montgomery County. The first opened in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands development two years ago.

All Set Restaurant & Bar in Silver Spring will offer vegetarian and vegan menu


All Set Restaurant & Bar in Silver Spring will offer an exclusively vegetarian and vegan menu for lunch and dinner on Tuesdays starting Aug. 31, the restaurant said.

Chef Ed Reavis, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Jennifer Meltzer, has created a variety of plant-based dishes for the menu in addition to selections from All Set’s regular daily menu, according to a press release.

Part of the inspiration came from a recent partnership between Reavis and the fast-casual chain Shouk, which serves plant-based Middle Eastern food.


Among the items that will be offered are the smoked mushroom sandwich (barbecue cremini, shiitake and oyster mushrooms, with other vegetables and barbecue sauce), smoked mushroom risotto (parmesan, shallots, lemon zest) and the Nashville hot eggplant sandwich, according to the press release.

New Gaithersburg pasta company delivering, serving farmers markets

Open Hand, a pasta manufacturer and food kit delivery company, is now operating out of a 4,400-square-foot space at 220 Girard St. in Gaithersburg.


Gaithersburg Assistant City Manager Tom Lonergan mentioned during a City Council meeting on Monday night that Open Hand had moved into the space on a lease.

Open Hand was started by area chef John Wood during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the website. Wood had been negotiating a lease to open a restaurant just before a stay-at-home order went into effect.

Open Hand delivers food kits weekly throughout the greater Washington region. They include homemade pastas, sauces, fresh cheeses and charcuterie. There are also “gourmet dog treats.”


Open Hand has also started delivering to local farmers markets, including North Bethesda and Rockville on Saturdays, Olney on Sundays and Potomac Village on Thursdays.

The company has six employees and hopes to hire two more, Lonergan said on Monday.
