The Rockville and Shady Grove Metro stations are scheduled later this year to close for repairs to canopies over the platforms.
The work will take place from Sept. 11 to Dec. 4, according to a Metro news release. Free shuttle bus service will be provided from those stations to and from other stations along Metro’s Red Line.
Construction crews for Metro will demolish and rebuild the canopy at the Rockville station, and repair the canopy at Shady Grove. The concrete beam structures, dating to the 1980s, are deteriorating, the new release stated.
“Replacing the canopy at Rockville Station will require heavy equipment and the demolition of the existing structure, section by section,” the news release stated. “The new canopy structure will be pre-fabricated and lifted into place for installation.”
Other canopy improvements will include new LED skylights, an upgraded speaker system, new digital screens and security cameras.
