Montgomery County gymnast Kayla DiCello was named an alternate for the U.S. Olympic team after competing this weekend in the Olympic trials in St. Louis.

Six women were chosen as competitors on the team, including Simone Biles, who finished first.

The other five are Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles, Grace McCallum, Jade Carey and MyKayla Skinner.

DiCello, 17, who lives in Boyds and trains at Hill’s Gymnastics in Gaithersburg, will be one of four alternates. The others are Kara Eaker, Emma Malabuyo and Leanne Wong.

The alternates will accompany the rest of the team to next month’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Eighteen athletes competed to make the team during the trials. DiCello had the sixth-highest all-around score.

She finished fifth on the floor routine, sixth on the vault, sixth on the balance beam and 10th on the bars.

DiCello recently finished her junior year at Northwest High School.
