A Wheaton woman was charged with attempted murder after police say she cut her 3-year-old daughter’s neck with scissors.

At about 10:50 a.m. on Saturday, police responded to a home on Hathaway Drive in the Wheaton area after receiving a 911 call from a resident reporting blood on the floor.

When police arrived, they found 28-year-old Anne Catherine Akers with a cut on her neck. As first responders treated her wound, they pulled away a blanket she was holding and found Akers’ 3-year-old daughter with a “life-threatening laceration to her neck,” according to a press release from the police department.

The child was taken to a local hospital, and later taken by helicopter to another hospital.

Doctors told police that if the girl had not received immediate care, she would have died, according to the press release.

Akers was charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and child abuse.
