Tacombi, a chain of taco restaurants in New York City, is planning to open at 4749 Bethesda Ave. in downtown Bethesda, a spokeswoman for landlord JBG Smith confirmed on Tuesday.
Justina Lombardo, a spokeswoman for JBG Smith, confirmed in an email to Bethesda Beat on Tuesday that Tacombi plans to open in the space. She did not provide additional details and referred all other questions to Tacombi.
Tacombi, according to its website, started in 2005 when its owners bought a 1963 Volkswagen Kombi bus in Mexico City, drove it to the Mexican coastal town of Playa del Carmen and sold the vehicle’s transmission. The owners converted the vehicle into a “taco-slinging machine,” the website states.
During the next couple of years, Tacombi served its meals out of two buses in Playa del Carmen, before the business moved to New York around 2008, according to the website.
Tacombi now has nine locations in New York, according to the website.
Tacombi’s taco menu includes selections such as al pastor (pork, pineapple, cilantro), fish tacos, black bean and sweet potato, avocado tostada and carne asada. Tacos range from $4 to $7.
The menu also includes burritas (similar to a burrito), which are wrapped in a flour tortilla and contain rice and beans, along with a type of meat or vegetable. There are six burritas between $10 and $13. There are also quesadillas on the menu for $5 to $8.
Ali DiEmidio, a spokeswoman for Tacombi, wrote in an email to Bethesda Beat Thursday that the restaurant will be 4,500 square feet and will open up to face the Capital Crescent Trail. Customers will be able to see the tacos being prepared, she wrote.
DiEmidio wrote that the Bethesda restaurant is expected to open this summer.
