Sergio Ristorante Italiano, an Italian restaurant inside the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Silver Spring, has closed permanently, its owner said.

Sergio Toni, the owner, told Bethesda Beat Thursday afternoon that he decided a few weeks ago that the restaurant wouldn’t reopen.

The restaurant, which has been around for 37 years, closed in mid-March at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and did not stay open for takeout or delivery, he said.

Toni said he decided it wasn’t worth trying to stay in business during the pandemic.

“We were losing money,” he said.

Toni said he doesn’t plan to start another restaurant.

“I’m 85 years old. I’ve worked too much,” he said jokingly.
