A Montgomery County police officer fatally shot a man while issuing a warrant early Thursday morning in Potomac, according to a news release from the department.
At approximately 4:30 a.m., police were serving a “high-risk search warrant” in the 12200 block of St. James Road in Potomac, according to the news release.
Police said that while issuing the warrant, a police officer fatally shot the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Duncan Socrates Lemp, who lived at the home. The warrant was related to firearms offenses, police said.
Officer Rick Goodale, a police spokesman, said in an interview Thursday night that a police SWAT team entered the home where Lemp was to serve the warrant. After encountering Lemp, the officer shot him.
Asked about what happened in the house before police fired shots, Goodale declined to comment, saying it was under investigation. He also declined to provide additional details on the firearms offenses Lemp was being charged with.
“All of that is still under investigation right now,” he said.
Goodale also declined to comment on online posts and connections by someone using the name Duncan Socrates Lemp and a screen name of Yungquant.
On a website called “My Militia, An American Patriot Network,” a person uses those names in a September 2019 post that appears to express an interest in training with a unit. Militia groups often participate in military-style training.
The officer was placed on administrative leave while the case is investigated and was not being identified yet Thursday afternoon.
