The Giant grocery store at 5463 Wisconsin Ave. in Friendship Heights will close next month, a company spokesman confirmed Monday.

The grocery store, which is part of The Collection at Chevy Chase retail area near the Washington, D.C. border, will close Jan. 9 because it is a small store and “wasn’t serving the community to the best of its ability,” Giant spokesman Daniel Wolk wrote in an email Monday.

“We believe Giant’s larger concept stores as well as the three nearby store locations will be better suited to provide the service our customers expect with updated amenities, and new layouts and décor,” Wolk wrote.

Wolk wrote that the store’s 67 workers will be offered jobs at other nearby Giants.

Jennifer Coursen, the marketing director of the Chevy Chase Land Company, which owns The Collection, wrote in an email Monday that another “full-service grocer” was anticipated to open later in 2020 in the Giant space. Coursen would not reveal the name of the store.
