Committees to discuss school nurse staffing

The County Council’s Health and Human Services and Education and Culture committees will hold a joint meeting on Monday to discuss a shortage of school nurses at Montgomery County Public Schools.

The committee will discuss making a special appropriation to fund at least one school nurse in every Montgomery County high school. Members will also seek additional information from the executive staff to learn how many nurses are needed in other schools.

The meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in the Council Hearing Room at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville.

The council has proposed amending the commission’s current capital improvements budget to authorize the purchase of WMATA property in Wheaton. The $6.8 million purchase would be used to build affordable housing and a new urban park.

The public hearing will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Council Hearing Room at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville.

School board to vote on capital improvements budget

The Montgomery County school board will meet Tuesday to vote on Superintendent Jack Smith’s proposed capital improvements budget for 2021 to 2026.

Smith unveiled the spending plan in late October. The five-year budget totals $1.82 billion — a more than $70 million increase over what has previously been approved. Nine schools are flagged for major improvements, in addition to a new high school planned for Gaithersburg.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in Carver Auditorium at 850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville.
