Zoning change would allow 5G towers in some residential areas
The Montgomery County Council will discuss a bill on Tuesday that would allow 5G towers in residential areas under certain conditions.
The legislation would amend the county’s zoning code to allow the towers — which transmit high-frequency signals over shorter distances — in residential areas if the base would replace a pre-existing utility pole, streetlight pole, or parking light pole. The 5G towers would be required to be at least 60 feet from the nearest habitable building.
The council will introduce the legislation during a council session that begins at 1 p.m in the third-floor hearing room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville.
Council Member Hans Riemer is the lead sponsor of the bill.
Charter Review Commission to discuss upcoming priorities
The Montgomery County Charter Review Commission will meet on Wednesday to discuss priorities for the upcoming year.
At the commission’s September meeting, County Executive Marc Elrich suggested a change to the county charter that would create nine individual council districts and keep two or four at-large seats. The commission hadn’t decided whether to take up the proposal, Chairman George Margolies said at the time.
Commission members must report to the County Council in May with recommendations for possible charter revisions.
The meeting starts at 8 a.m. in the Potomac Conference Room on the sixth floor of the Council Office Building.
Planning Board to discuss development in Germantown
The Montgomery County Planning Board will discuss a significant development in Germantown on Thursday.
The Poplar Grove development would create 176 individual lots and allow for up to 1,206,000 square feet of mixed-use construction, including 176 townhomes and 365 multi-family units. The site would also accommodate up to 520,000 square feet of nonresidential uses.
The board will decide whether to issue a preliminary approval of the development at the meeting, which begins at 11 a.m. in the MRO Auditorium at 8787 Georgia Ave. in Silver Spring.
