A furniture refurbishing business, artisan gift store and home improvement contractor company in Kensington were heavily damaged in a fire early Thursday morning.
According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer, the call was for a fire at a commercial building 4140 Howard Ave. Piringer posted on Twitter that the fire caused $1.2 million in structural damage to the building.
The furniture store, he wrote, suffered the most damage. There was collateral damage to the adjacent businesses of Marigold & Grey, an artisan gift store, and Hernandez Painter Decorator Inc., a home improvement contractor.
Piringer said in an interview Thursday morning that the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it started in the furniture store. He added that crews salvaged several items from Marigold & Grey that were destined for an upcoming wedding.
Neither Marigold & Grey nor Hernandez Painter Decorator Inc. could be reached for comment Thursday morning.
