The inaugural class of the new Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame — including Bethesda swimming star Katie Ledecky — will be inducted on Friday.
Ledecky has won five gold medals and one silver medal in the Olympics and has 15 world championship gold medals.
Other members of the initial class are:
- Olympic gold medal gymnast Dominique Dawes, who lives in Silver Spring. Dawes won four medals in three Olympic Games and four world championship medals.
- High school football coach Bob Milloy, who won 405 games in 47 years, one of the highest totals in the country. He began as an assistant coach at DeMatha, then coached at Whitman, Springbrook, Sherwood and Good Counsel.
- Soccer player Bruce Murray, who played professionally, in the Olympics and in the World Cup for the U.S. At Churchill High, he also played club soccer for the Washington United Ponies, winning two national titles. He won NCAA tournament titles as a freshman and a senior at Clemson University.
- Shawn Springs, who played with three NFL teams — Seattle, Washington and New England. Springs, who played locally at Springbrook High School, was an All-State cornerback and running back. He was an All-American at The Ohio State University.
- Hall of Fame baseball pitcher Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators. He had 417 wins, 110 shutouts and 531 complete games and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in the inaugural class in 1936.
“These men and women have brought recognition and honor to our community in their respective fields,” Trish Heffelfinger, the chairwoman of the board of the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame, said in a news release.
The inductees will be honored at a ceremony from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Center.
Dawes, Milloy, Murray and Springs are scheduled to attend, as will Johnson’s family. Ledecky will not attend, but will accept through a video segment recorded in advance.
The event is free, but online registration is required.
