A Gaithersburg man was killed when two motorcycles crashed on Interstate 270 in Frederick County on Saturday, state police said.
Troopers responded to northbound I-270 at 1:48 p.m. for a report of a crash near Doctor Perry Road in Ijamsville, state police said. A preliminary investigation showed that two motorcycles hit each other, causing the riders to lose control of the vehicles.
Dan J. Stanback, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second rider was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment. State police did not have an update on their status on Monday morning.
All lanes of I-270 were closed following the incident and didn’t reopen for more than four hours.
No charges had been filed as of Monday morning.
State police have responded to seven fatal crashes involving motorcycles in Maryland since July 28. The department released an announcement about motorcycle safety on Thursday, detailing six recent crashes and reminding riders to take necessary precautions.
There are an average of 70 traffic fatalities associated with motorcycles statewide each year, state police said, citing Maryland Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office data.
