More than 75 MCPS students graduate from summer school
More than 75 high school students from across the county completed their high school education this summer. They received their diplomas at a summer school commencement ceremony on Aug. 8 at Gaithersburg High School.
Some students could not graduate on time due to illness or personal emergencies. Others who participated in the ceremony graduated early, according to MCPS.
“Whether your road was traffic free … or, like a winding, back road, that offered you a scenic view, you are here because you have made it,” school board member Brenda Wolff said in the ceremony’s commencement address. A recap of the ceremony is available on the MCPS website.
Maryland high school history curricula will include LGBT issues
The Maryland State Department of Education is updating its high school history curriculum standards to include a requirement to teach students about LGBT and disability rights movements.
Del. Eric Luedtke, a Montgomery County Democrat, pushed for the update and formally submitted the request to the state department last month.
“These are important stories for our teachers to tell, not only for those students who are themselves LGBT or who have a disability, but so all of our students have a basic understanding of the challenges faced by significant segments of American society,” Luedtke wrote in a letter to the department.
A draft framework for the updated curriculum is expected in 2020.
Fall sports season begins
The Montgomery County Public Schools fall sports season started Wednesday with tryouts for all sports.
Each school and sport has its own schedule for tryouts and practices, so MCPS officials urge families to check their school’s website for detailed information.
Some fall sports offered by MCPS schools include soccer, field hockey, football, golf, cross-country and volleyball.
